The service
Therapeutic phlebotomy at home, without the clinic journey
If you need blood removed as part of a treatment plan, travelling to a clinic for every appointment can be difficult. Our qualified professionals provide the procedure privately in your home.
What is therapeutic phlebotomy?
Therapeutic phlebotomy is the removal of blood for a medical purpose. It is also known as therapeutic venesection, venesection or blood letting. It differs from an ordinary blood test: its purpose is treatment rather than taking a small sample for laboratory analysis.
Suitability, volume and frequency depend on your individual clinical circumstances. Every enquiry is clinically reviewed before an appointment is confirmed.

Who may require therapeutic phlebotomy?
People enquire about therapeutic phlebotomy for several clinically recognised reasons. Having a high reading or one of these conditions does not automatically mean blood removal is appropriate; each case requires review.
Raised haematocrit
Elevated haematocrit or haemoglobin associated with TRT or other hormone treatments.
Other conditions
Where reducing blood volume or viscosity has been clinically indicated.
Send your recent blood results and the advice you have received. We review this information and your medical history before confirming whether an appointment can be arranged. Your treating clinician remains responsible for your TRT and treatment plan.
Your home visit
What happens during the appointment?
Pre-procedure checks
We check blood pressure and hydration and complete the consent form.
Blood removal
Blood is withdrawn through a sterile cannula into a collection bag. Typically 400–450 ml is removed, subject to your clinical review.
Rest and recovery
You remain seated for 10–15 minutes with fluids while we monitor your recovery.
Aftercare
We provide clear guidance before leaving your home.
Safe disposal
All procedure waste is removed and disposed of safely; nothing is left at your home.
The full appointment usually takes approximately 20–40 minutes, including checks, the procedure and recovery monitoring.
Before booking
Do I need a referral?
A GP or specialist referral is preferred, including your diagnosis, recent blood results and a recommendation for the procedure.
If you do not have a referral, Venus Blood Services can review your latest results—such as haematocrit, ferritin and full blood count—alongside your medical history. All cases undergo clinical review before an appointment is confirmed.
Frequency depends on your condition, blood results and clinical guidance. Maintenance appointments around 8–12 weeks may be discussed for some people receiving TRT, but this is not suitable for everyone. Haemochromatosis may require much more frequent venesection initially, so timing must follow your treating clinician's plan. Retesting 2–4 weeks after a procedure may help guide subsequent decisions.

Common questions
Before you enquire
Is therapeutic phlebotomy the same as venesection or blood letting?
Yes. These terms are all used for removing blood as a treatment. You may see “venesection” in clinical information and “therapeutic phlebotomy” when searching for a provider.
Is it the same as a blood test?
No. A routine blood test collects a small sample for analysis. Therapeutic phlebotomy removes blood as part of a clinically reviewed treatment plan. Tests may also be collected during the visit where appropriate.
Can I book at home in Kent?
Yes. Send your postcode and treatment requirements so we can confirm availability and your location-based appointment price.
Do you cover Essex and South East London?
Yes. We cover Essex and all South East London areas. Appointments depend on availability rather than fixed area days.
How much does an appointment cost?
Therapeutic phlebotomy costs £100–£150 depending on location. Any additional testing is itemised before you book.
